What is Waterlase™?

The Waterlase™ Hard and Soft tissue laser features a patented Laser-energized water technology which treats cavity preps precisely and safely with little or no discomfort. The water quickly and gently removes enamel, dentin and decay without causing heat or microfractures associated with traditional high-speed drills.

RETURN

What Is HydroKinetic Technology?

The HydroKinetic process is the removal of tissue with YSGG laser-energized water droplets. HydroKinetic energy is produced by combining a spray of atomized water with laser energy. The resulting HydroKinetic energy gently and precisely removes a wide range of human tissue including tooth enamel (the hardest substance in the body), and soft tissue (gum tissue) with no heat and no pain in most cases.

RETURN

Is the laser safe?

In the hands of your trained dentist, the Waterlase is as safe as other medical devices. With it's 2 mm active range from the tip, the laser provides pinpoint accuracy, reducing the chance of causing damage to healthy tissue. The primary safety measure necessary during laser treatment is proper protective glasses.

RETURN

Does Waterlase™ Hurt?

Almost never! Heat and vibration are the causes of most of the discomfort associated with the drill. since Hydrokinetic™ cutting does not transmit heat or vibration, many dental procedures can be preformed without anesthesia, in most cases.

Since a shot is not necessary in most cases, you will not have numb or drooping lips after your dental procedure.

The art and science of dentistry have changed, offering a no needle, no drill, no fear procedure for removing decay.

RETURN

Can you tell me a little more about Waterlase™?

Since Waterlase™ uses a laser to energize atomized water it is directed only to the area of tooth decay, your dentist removes only minimal sections of tooth - only the decayed area. Until now, all the dentist had to use was that noisy drill. But it was so big - in comparison to our beam of water - that it removed a lot of healthy tooth structure. Waterlase™ allows for very small cavity preparations and is part of what is called MicroDentistry.

RETURN

What is MicroDentistry?

MicroDentistry is the philosophy and practice of finding and treating decay as early as possible, of removing as little tooth structure as possible, of making the smallest possible restorations (fillings) and of assuring that those restorations are esthetically pleasing and long lasting. MicroDentistry is a broader term than Waterlase. Waterlase™ is the part of the procedure that removes the decay and prepares the tooth for restoration.

RETURN

What should I know about early detection and treatment?

At the slightest hint of tooth decay, your dentist will put a "caries detection dye" on the suspicious tooth. This colored liquid helps identify the position and extent of decay - even that not visible to the naked eve. Your dentist then can take care of the problem - usually in less than 10 minutes.

2. Prep.

3. Fill

4. Finish

RETURN

If my dentist detects tooth decay, can it be treated immediately?

Immediately and minimally. Early detection means early treatment. We're talking about decay here, tooth rot! Why wait for it to spread, wait for the cavity to get bigger? Your dentist can take care of it today, giving you healthier teeth before you leave the office.

RETURN

Why is Waterlase™ better than the old drill?

The waterlase device that we use instead of the drill eliminates the odors, noise, vibration, micro-cracks and, in most cases, the shot associated with the drill.

Once Waterlase™ removes the decay, how is the cavity filled?

This is the beautiful part - literally! Dr. McClinchey will fill that cavity with a nearly invisible, non-mercury filling, making the entire tooth strong, long lasting and resistant to decay.

New Composite Restoration

RETURN

Is the finish attractive?

Definitely! It's going to look like a brand new tooth.

RETURN

Can children as well as adults benefit from Waterlase™?

Absolutely! Waterlase is perfect for children. Most cavities that are detected early can be treated immediately, without a drill and without a needle. The tooth is then restored with natural looking materials to strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure. Most children are not even aware of what the dentist is doing.

Fewer dental appointments for the young patient are usually required because with Waterlase™ many more procedures can be completed in a single appointment.

RETURN

What other procedures is Waterlase™ good for?

Besides removing decay, Waterlase™ works well in these procedures:

  • Root Canals

  • Cavity preparation

  • Smile design

  • General soft tissue procedures

  • General dentistry for enamel and dentin

  • Avoid the shot and being "numbed"

Painless Root Canals?

After close development with leading clinicians and universities, Biolase has developed the Kimmel Endo Tip that along with the Waterlase™ will perform complete laser root canal treatment.
